Overview
A business can look credible online and still carry risk that deserves a closer look. Another can have a limited web presence and still be exactly what it claims to be. A storefront provides useful information, but it rarely tells the whole story.
Middesk Business Risk is now live and ready to use. It helps risk, fraud, and compliance teams assess businesses before they move deeper into onboarding or review.
Business Risk builds on Middesk’s foundation as an identity intelligence platform. Middesk helps teams understand who a business is. Business Risk analyzes dozens of attributes and delivers a top-line evaluation of business legitimacy, with each underlying factor available for review.
Surface risk earlier
Business Risk brings together web presence, industry context, risk synthesis, supporting evidence, and a top-level risk score. It also surfaces operational, reputational, and transaction-laundering risk indicators that can help teams determine where deeper review may be needed.
Teams can use these outputs to:
- Route higher-risk businesses for additional review
- Add risk context to an existing KYB process
- Inform customer-owned filtering and onboarding policies
- Feed web, industry, and risk signals into internal systems and models
- Give reviewers more context about why a business may warrant attention
The score provides a fast way to prioritize what to review. The underlying indicators and evidence help reviewers understand why.
Business Risk does not make the final decision for the customer. Each team defines how scores and indicators affect its policies, thresholds, routing, and review process.
Built with merchant risk top of mind
Payment platforms, marketplaces, and other companies that onboard merchants or sellers often need to assess more than whether a business is registered. They need to understand what the business appears to sell, how it presents itself online, whether its industry matches the submitted information, and whether other risk indicators warrant review.
Business Risk helps teams surface those signals before a merchant moves deeper into activation. It can be used as a standalone risk assessment or alongside Middesk Verify, where it adds risk context to the business identity and authoritative records already used during KYB.
Web Analysis is used as part of Business Risk, allowing web presence to become an important input to a broader assessment that includes risk dimensions, indicators, evidence, and a score.
Risk can change after onboarding
While an initial assessment is essential for deciding to work with a business, it captures a business at a point in time. The business may change afterward.
Middesk Monitoring complements Business Risk by helping teams see meaningful changes after onboarding. Monitoring can be added to surface changes to Secretary of State registrations or ownership information, as well as new adverse media.
Together, these capabilities support a more complete risk lifecycle:
- Verify who the business is
- Assess the risk it may carry
- Monitor how it changes over time
This is the promise of an identity intelligence platform: give teams the identity foundation, risk context, and ongoing visibility needed to make more informed decisions throughout the customer lifecycle.
